This is a tiny village. Ruins of the then most attractive of Irish Palladian Houses, said to have been designed by Lovett Pearce and Richard Cassells in 1731 and attached landscapes can be seen here. Though a castle here survived many a time from being destroyed by fire, the Civil War in 1922 was an occasion when it was shattered. Nothing other than a car park, a picnic site and forest walks are available here today.
Slane is a beautiful residential village, planned by the Conynghams, with large country houses built around a crossroads. The main attraction of this village is the four excellent Georgian houses that stand face to face at the meeting point of the N2 and N15 roads. The Slane Castle, not far from the village and built on a beautiful site above the river valley, is an attractive castellated mansion with towers and embattled parapets. This is the home of Lord Henry, Earl of Mountcharles which, with the surrounding grounds resembling a natural gigantic amphitheater, become a famous concert place. But unfortunately this castle was accidentally consumed by fire in 1991.
About 6.4km from Lough Ramor (County Cavan) and 10km from Lough Sheelin, Oldcastle is an attraction for anglers. If trout (fish) is the element of attraction in Sheelin, Ramour is famous for fresh water fish except salmon and trout. Oldcastle is the traditional home of Irish music and dance. The ceili house in the town is venue for regular sessions in these arts, at every level. A major portion of the local countryside is consumed by an extensive park called Loughcrew Demesne. The actual birthplace of Saint Oliver Plunkett is a subject for continual argument locally, but Though it is very certain that Saint Oliver Plunkett was born in a house in the south east corner of the churchyard at Loughcrew, it is a matter of locall controversy even today. The Dromone crossroads is just 3.2 km from Loughcrew Demense close to which you find the ruins of Moylagh church and castle.
There lies some fascinating woodland and rural scenery around 30 miles from Dublin City, North east of the village of Nobber. The Danish Fort located near the town is a fine location for visitors. This place is mainly known as the native place of Carolan (1670), a famous Irish harper who became blind at an early age. Still he kept on to be one of the most celebrated Irish musicians of the time. The last of the great Irish harpists, Turlough O Carolan was born here in 1670.
There is a superb sandy beach extending from south of Laytown to Mornington. Every inch of this coast is suitable for pleasant and safe bath. A ancient burial mound of eight meters in the shape of a bee-hive is found here, which is considered to be that of Laogh, one of Cuchulainn’s charioteers. Near this town is situated Sonairte, the National Ecology Centre.
