This is a coastal resort lying on a short patch of coastline which is County Meaths only outlet to the sea. Its name derives from Baile an Bhiadhtaigh meaning the town of the Hospitaller. A long beautiful sandy beach lies 10 km to the south of the adjacent Laytown to the mouth of Boyne as Mornington. In 1850 was found out on the beach at Bettystown the 18th century Tara Brooch, one of the best samples of the gold ornamental art of the Early Christian Ireland which is presently preserved in the National Monument in Dublin.
